must be that new math

Category: politics |

So the final Senate election has been settled. George Allen is out and Jim Webb is in. Too bad the Democrats didn’t win a couple more races so they could have a majority. What’s that you say? Everybody says they do have a majority?

Hmmm. Let’s see, the Republicans had 40 seats not in play and the Democrats only had 27. The Republicans won 9 seats and the Democrats won 22. Bear with me here, it’s been years since I was in a math class, 40 + 9 = 49 and 27 + 22 =, uhm, 49.

Ah. 49 + 49 only equals 98. That’s two more seats I forgot about. Well, let’s just call them Democrats. We only have two parties after all, right?

What, one of those Senators lost the Democratic primary and ran as an independent? Oh, well, I guess we shouldn’t call him a Democrat then. And the other guy’s a Socialist? Isn’t that the same as a Democrat? No? Ok. So 2 independents.

So, 49, 49, and 2. Looks like a tie to me.
