Turns out I’m not alone in wishing George Lucas would finally leave Star Wars behind and get back to making crazy little avant garde art films. Francis Ford Coppola, who has written off big budgets himself to go make small personal films, said the same thing last night at the Rialto.
My friend David and I were fortunate enough to hear him speak last night following a screening of a new documentary by his wife about the making of his new film and who he is at fifty-eighteen (as he, very aptly, describes his age). Turns out that it’s taken him the past decade to get to the point I’m at now, in that he works a day job to fund his filmmaking. Over the course of the evening (up until we all got kicked out at 10:30), he answered (at great length) questions on topics ranging from specific sequences of his films to consciousness and language to advice for what was likely an audience made up almost entirely of aspiring filmmakers.
It was a fascinating evening and one I highly recommend if he’s coming to a town near you. I’d put up a list of where all he will be going, but can’t seem to find one. Looks like he’ll be in Miami on Sunday, New York on the 19th, Minneapolis on the 23rd, and probably in several other cities as well. (Googling with the words “coda”, “coppola” and your city should bring up any events in your area.)
